Appleby-in-Westmorland is a town in Cumbria in North West England. It is situated within a loop of the River Eden. It is in the historic county of Westmorland, of which it was the county town. Appleby, is well known for its Horse Fair. This colourful event takes place in the town each June and draws Gypsy families from all over the country - they come these days in the large comfortable trailers that have replaced the painted caravans of yesteryear. Appleby is fortunate to be in the midst of much natural beauty, to the one side you have the rolling countryside of the Yorkshire Moors and, on the other side, the mighty peaks of the Lake District rise majestically as if to over-shadow the moors.
