About Cleator : : |

The village of Cleator, and nearby town of Cleator Moor, are some five miles southeast of Whitehaven, the port from which much of the iron ore, minerals and coal mined in the area were shipped. An iron works was built in Cleator Moor in 1840, and during the potato famine shortly after that there was a huge influx of Irish immigrants to the district to work in the industry, leading to Cleator Moor's local nickname "Little Ireland".
