The city of Exeter is the county town of Devon, in the southwest of England, also known as the West Country. The local authority is Exeter City Council. Exeter has been inhabited for approximately 2000 years through every significant period of English history. Founded by the Romans it is now a thriving Cathedral and University City, surrounded by beautiful countryside and close to the sea. This is reputed to be the oldest municipal building in the country still in full civic use. Until around 1830 the Stocks were present in the middle arch of the building. England's oldest canal runs from the popular Quayside down to the River Exe, passing the ancient town of Topsham.
