Kingsbridge is a market town and popular tourist hub in the South Hams district of Devon, England. It is situated at the northern end of the Kingsbridge Estuary, which is a textbook example of a ria and extends to the sea 6 miles south of the town. One of its quaint alleyways is, for reasons unknown, called “Squeezebelly Alley!” Week day markets are still held in the town in the Elizabethan market hall, a fascinating building called the Shambles raised upon granite pillars. It was so named after a local resident, William Cookworthy, who discovered china clay in the mid 18th Century. As well as an exhibition of some of the finest English porcelain ever made, there are 9 galleries of exhibits to be perused. On the way out, visitors can take a relaxing stroll through the lovely walled garden. The abundance of excellent pubs, restaurants, cafes and places to stay have made the town of Kingsbridge a popular base for walking, rambling and cycling holidays.
